I wish I had been up on Mount Maxwell tonight to take a photo of Howe Sound Queen navigating Sansum Narrows:

BC marine historian and author Syd Heal passed away today. He was in his early 90s. For a view of his long and interesting life, see this fine article: HEREOh no, that's sad. I'm a big fan of his books, have many in my collection.

The 0400 departure of Seaspan Challenger from the Nanaimo terminal Monday morning will be the last one before all drop trailer service shifts to Duke Point. Another end of an era for Seaspan and Nanaimo.

In the mid seventies I worked a short stint aboard the Cindy Mozel. Not sure I have all my facts straight here but as I recall, the Cindy Mozel operated by Rivtow Straits under contract to BC Ferries, towed a covered barge to provide twice weekly scheduled service between Prince Rupert and Skidegate. In those days passengers would drop off their cars, trucks, tractor trailers or heavy equipment at Rivtows yard and then fly across and pick up their vehicles on the other side. I wonder if anyone has pictures they would be willing to share of the Cindy Mozel with her barge sporting the Rivtow colors or if anyone has any stories of their experiences traveling the route in that era or if anyone knows the whereabouts of the Cindy Mozel now or the barge, the name of which escapes me. I don't have any photos of her but Cindy Mozel currently is owned by Island Tug & Barge where she tows oil barges on BC's coast.

I was pretty happy when I heard that Bowen Queen's subbing on the Port McNeill / Alert Bay / Sointula route would coincide with my trip to Port MacNeill. It took me three attempts to get a decent photo though, the weather just wouldn't cooperate. Anyways, on my final attempt today I was able to capture the photo below:

So Far the Swift and the Reliant are not Sched for Nanaimo Service. I read somewhere they won't be used on the Nanaimo run. They will go to Duke Point when the terminal there is finished.

Spent the weekend photographing the Englewood Railway, below are two photos from the trip. Thanks for those. I trust that it wasn't 100% rain this time. Where were you headquartered for the nights? Just curious if Port McNeill is the best home-base for this kind of weekend train-spotting. Yesterday the weather was a little of everything: drizzle, rain, sleet, sun, literally wait 5 minutes and it would change. Today was mostly light rain turning to a downpour as I was leaving. I was totally prepared for the elements this time so no issues! Port MacNeill is the place to stay, close to Beaver Cove and 30 minutes to Woss if you want to start there. Nice to have a few amenities nearby whereas Woss is pretty minimal.

Snapped a couple of pics today on my lunch break, only had my cell phone for photos. Like how it looks sans 3M wraps.

Seaspan tug, Seaspan Champion, hauls a rail car barge into Vancouver Harbour c 2000. This is scanned from a negative shot by my brother, mrdot . I assume these are rail cars coming from the E&N Railway on Vancouver Island. Questions for people that might know ( Chris City ?): - Can you say for certain that this is E&N freight? - Who was running the E&N at that time? I think the year was 2000, but it might have been the previous year. - When did the Tilbury Terminal open? I assume this barge would be berthed at the old CP terminal near Canada Place. © Mr DOT by mrdot., on FlickrFirst thing, what a great photo, unlikely to ever be duplicated! In 2000 RailAmerica was operating the E&N but I believe all E&N rail traffic to the mainland went by Carrier Princess to Tilbury, not sure when Tilbury opened but it's been quite a few years now. I think this barge is from one of the coastal mills and is probably headed for the BNSF barge slip on the waterfront off Centennial Road. BNSF served those mills up until 2005 and that was when the SRY slip on Annacis Island opened and they acquired all the contracts from BNSF.

Did that thread on FB get shut down? There was some great info there.... When I checked this morning to see if anyone had answered my question about crewing levels on the Swift, Carrier Princess, and Princess Superior, I saw that for some reason the moderator had closed comments, and my question was gone. Very odd. Another thing I hate about facebook: stuff just gets lost instead of archived. There was a great conversation about the Seaspan Doris some weeks ago, but when I searched the name, the only thing that came up were the few posts that had photos attached. Forums like this one are dying out, but what's replacing them is disorganized and not useful for research. I missed all the drama I guess, seems to happen a lot in the FB groups I belong to. I have absolutely no interest in any of that. I guess I missed the Seaspan Doris conversation too, would've really liked to have read that.

Yup, that's the one. Main gate is locked, left side gate has a keyless entry keypad, other side is just shut. I checked with the Port Authority, and it's closed for the icy weather. The side gates should be open again when the weather warms up. Thanks for the info, Mike! That news will make that old man happy (and myself!).

That's a bad one Mike! I have a question for you, since when did they start locking the gate to the dock that David J is currently moored at? The last two times I've been to Nanaimo it's been locked, is that a permanent thing? That was always a favorite place of mine to go to. I asked an elderly gentleman who was walking by if he knew about it and he went off on a profanity laden tirade, he obviously wasn't happy about it either! The main gate has always been closed, but open on either side. I haven't been there in a few weeks (ok maybe 2 months) and so that change would be new to me too. I assume where talking about the "W.Mills Visiting Vessel" float, where the Polar Bear yacht usually ties up. Yup, that's the one. Main gate is locked, left side gate has a keyless entry keypad, other side is just shut.

MV Kuper suddenly appearing from a wall of snow as two Jones Marine tugs sit and wait for their next assignment. The sight of a Jones tug always gives me a sinking feeling... But seriously, I get to see the new DAVID J frequently, at her Nanaimo regular mooring spot. That's a bad one Mike! I have a question for you, since when did they start locking the gate to the dock that David J is currently moored at?
